Waterfront Landowners
Waterfront landowners enjoy the beauty of our rivers. They also have unique opportunities to help restore them:
- Participate in oyster restoration by growing oyster spat off your dock in floating tanks or cages at no cost to you. Oysters will filter and clean your river. Encourage your neighbors to participate.
- Place an aeration system off your dock to add oxygen to the water. For more information contact us or call Bill Wolinski, Talbot County Engineer 410 –770-8170.
- Download Aeration Information (PDF)
- Reduce or eliminate fertilizer and pesticide use. These lead to nutrient runoff, the leading pollutant of our waterways.
- Line your shoreline and any ditches on your property with buffers of native grasses, trees, and shrubs. (The wider the buffer near the water, the more filtration of nutrients will occur.)
- Restore eroding areas with natural shorelines which filter nutrients, provide habitat, and often withstand storms and wave action better than bulkheads.
- If you have a septic system, upgrade by arranging for installation of a denitrifying treatment unit which will reduce nitrogen discharge, and which will be paid for by the Bay Restoration Fund.
