riverkeeper2Midshore RIVERKEEPER® Conservancy employs senior scientists, a Choptank RIVERKEEPER® and a Miles-Wye RIVERKEEPER® who regularly patrol their rivers and tributaries, are ready to combat illegal pollution, and serve as guardians for these living resources. MRC also employs other scientists, outreach coordinators, and an experienced legal advocate, all of whom strive to work at every level to improve and protect our rivers.

Licensed by WATERKEEPER® ALLIANCE, the Conservancy is part of a growing network of over 180 river, bay, and lake “keeper” programs around the nation whose active presence on waterways is becoming a force for change.

Midshore RIVERKEEPER® Conservancy is also a member of WATERKEEPERS Chesapeake, a group of eighteen Chesapeake Bay advocacy programs which are pooling resources, coordinating efforts, and building leverage to impact environmental legislation and policy across the watershed.

On the Choptank, throughout the Bay and across the nation, these efforts are making a difference.

The WATERKEEPER Alliance sprung from grass roots environmental advocacy begun on the Hudson River in the 1960s. It is now an international center coordinating WATERKEEPER programs around the globe.  The ALLIANCE approves and licenses WATERKEEPER programs, provides litigation and administrative resources, represents individual WATERKEEPER causes, develops clean water initiatives, and serves as a meeting place for all the WATERKEEPERS to exchange information, strategy and know-how. MRC, however has its own board of directors and determines its own policies and priorities independently.

WATERKEEPERS are conservation champions for the water bodies they represent, and presently patrol and protect over 100,000 miles of rivers, streams and shoreline, supporting 350 full-time and 150 part-time environmental activists, attorneys, and scientists.
